I was at my Mom's place over the Holidays and got these. She spent the last part of her career with the Shuttle program and you're looking at a pile of mission patches from the first 35 missions. By far and away, the coolest one is front and center: the Enterprise patch from the approach/glide tests they did in prior to the first space shots.
Now I'm thinking about collecting the rest. I've got a pretty good start with arguably the oldest/rarest.

These are awesome. What's the story with that Messerschmidt one?

Whats the coolest is the person who took part in all of this. I bet there are some awesome stories behind those patches.

That was one of the astronauts on that particular mission, no relation to the German company.

Ah, thanks.
Worst day ever for that patch maker.

Definately. She was involved in "customer relations" which really meant her primary jerb was to coordinate visits by dignitaries/celebrities at the final assembly plant in Palmdale. She got to rub elbows with the likes of Reagan, Prince Charles, various and sundry Saudi royalty, etc, etc, etc. It was a nice way to wrap up a career with Rockwell that started when they were North American with the XB-70 program and included the B-1 program.

Nice! The only patches I have are from the 391st Fighter Squadron at Mountain Home AFB. Got them for hooking them up with a shit ton of computer equipment and maintaining it for them. Nothing near as awesome as your collection but I find them awesome nonetheless.
